By Lissette Rondon
On May 18, 2014, Miami Fashion Week’s 16th Anniversary came to a vibrant close with the unmistakable magic of Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. Held at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the finale runway was a burst of bold colors, playful patterns, and signature motifs—including oversized hearts, sailor stripes, and whimsical bows. Some pieces were even hand-painted by Agatha herself, blending her love for fashion and art in a way that only she can.
That unforgettable night, Agatha didn’t just take over the runway—she was crowned with the prestigious Victoria Puig de Lange International Style Award, honoring her global impact on fashion.
As the founder of Miami Fashion Spotlight, I had the privilege of going backstage for an exclusive one-on-one with Agatha, where she opened up about her Miami experience, her creative journey, and her advice to new designers.
“I Feel Like a Queen in Miami”
LR: How do you feel being back in Miami?
Agatha: “Like a queen! Everyone is treating me so well. I came to Miami 4 or 5 years ago when I won another award, but this time I brought a group of amazing people from Spain and we’re having a blast! Miami is the perfect place for my collection—full of color, architecture, and style. It’s so fashionable here, and now it’s a style that’s being imitated everywhere.”
Miami Fashion Week Through Agatha’s Eyes
LR: What did you think of Miami Fashion Week 2014?
Agatha: “I’m good friends with one of the organizers, so I was thrilled to be invited. I think this event is really important for the Spanish and Latin American fashion scene. The opening party had over 1,000 people—it was so exciting!”
Fashion Meets Art: A Hand-Painted Touch
LR: Can you give us a sneak peek into your collection?
Agatha: “Some of the fabrics were hand-painted by me! Before I became a fashion designer, I wanted to be a painter. I used to buy fabric and paint it myself. This collection reflects that passion—and the colors really fit Miami’s style.”

30 Years of Creativity: The Agatha Foundation
LR: Tell us about your foundation.
Agatha: “Three years ago, I celebrated the 30th anniversary of my first fashion show, and I decided it was time to start a fashion foundation. We organized everything—4,000 boxes of slides, photos, documents. It was a huge job! But we also celebrated with a fashion show and an exhibition of my 50 favorite designs at the ‘Correr’ Museum in Venice. That same exhibit went to Lima and Santiago de Chile.”
A Runway Reunion with Beth Sobol
LR: Any special moments from this year’s MFW?
Agatha: “Yes! I ran into Beth Sobol (the founder of MFW), and she showed me a photo of herself modeling in one of my shows 25 years ago! The collection was called ‘Agatha For President.’ She was wearing one of my wild designs—it brought back such great memories.”
Elegant Nostalgia and Colorful Conviction
LR: What caught your attention from the exhibitions tonight?
Agatha: “I really loved the vintage uniforms from Eastern Air Lines. They were so elegant!”
LR: How would you describe your personality?
Agatha: “True to myself. Maybe a little misunderstood. When everyone wore black, I was all color. But when you stay true to your vision, people learn to respect it.”
Her Next Stop—and Words of Wisdom
LR: What’s your next destination?
Agatha: “Back to Madrid—I’ve been on a whirlwind lately. I’ll be receiving an award in Valencia.”
LR: What message would you send to emerging designers?
Agatha: “Be patient. So many people are obsessed with success. But success is nothing—it’s just part of the journey. What matters is enjoying each day. If you have fun while you work, life becomes a joy.”
