Her senior collection, A Country Boy from Congo, was recently featured in Vogue following its debut on the runway at SCAD FASHION 2025, the university’s premier annual fashion event. Honoring Heritage Through Fashion
Sumbu’s story begins with her father, who immigrated from Congo to Texas at age 29. That journey—and the complex duality it represents—inspired her to challenge conventional ideas around assimilation and belonging.
“You don’t have to choose between the culture you come from and the one you live in—you can honor both,” Gabriella affirms.
Her collection is an empowering tribute to that philosophy, blending two seemingly different worlds—the rugged symbolism of American cowboy culture with the vibrant storytelling of Congolese fashion.
From Cowboy Grit to Congolese Pride
Titled A Country Boy from Congo, the collection merges the iconic silhouettes of cowboy attire with the richness of Congolese textiles. Think denim meets Dutch wax, raffia replaces fringe, and horses and stars dance alongside presidential prints. Each piece is deeply intentional, fusing heritage and modernity in a way that feels entirely new.
Inspirations like Louis Vuitton’s FW24 “The Harder They Fall” show and Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter further informed the aesthetic, reinforcing themes of resilience, empowerment, and narrative strength.
