Miami Fashion Week and Eastern Air Lines held a press conference on April 29th, 2014 at the Epic Hotel in Downtown Miami, to officially announce Eastern Air Lines’ sponsorship and introduce the designer finalists for the flight attendant uniform competition launched earlier this month.
Eastern Air Lines, once a major airline with its base in Miami, announced earlier this year that it plans to launch service from the Miami International Airport, where it was once headquartered before the airline’s dissolution in 1991. In the spirit of fashion and EAL’s sponsorship, Miami Fashion Week launched a contest inviting local designers to design the company’s new flight attendant uniforms.

The five finalists-Lisu Vega, Vivana G., Samy Gicherman, Kayce Armstrong, Julian Chang- will present their designs at the EAL showcase at Miami Fashion Week on May 15th-18th where a panel of judges will determine who will land a contract with EAL.
One of the five finalists, Lisu Vega, said she was inspired to dress the new flight attendants in something more unique. “I just tried to create something really unique, like independent, like a model in the sky.”

Viviana Gabeira was inspired by the future, as she opted for a more athletic, movable and practical design and Sammy Gicherman looked to the destinations the flight attendants would travel to create what he described as a uniform that’s “very couture, feminine, and gorgeous.”

As for Kayce Armstrong, she designed the uniforms with the intention of having women think, “I would actually buy that in the store, not, ‘Oh God I can’t believe those girls have to wear those uniforms.'”
