Stimulated by what’s raw and real, Miami native and fashion designer Lisu Vega got intimate with the city’s real estate development to create Fall/Winter 2013 Contemplation, a new collection unveiled on the international runway of the 15th Annual Miami Fashion Week on opening night, March 20, 2013 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Drawn to demolished buildings around town, recent new developments in the Miami Design District provided the scenes center to Vega’s Contemplation Collection. Among the many digital prints are remnants of the Collins Building, host to many functions but now gone to make way for a new vision by Craig Robbins, the areas top Real Estate Developer. Vega, identifying with any resemblance of meaning in broken cinder blocks, mountains of deconstruction debris, and big yellow caterpillars, captures this moment in time and draws us closer to examine the process of the old making way for the new.

Degreed in Experimental Graphic Art, “bold and bald” was the creative direction given by Vega to makeup team Michelle Diamantides and Nikki Oxley to compliment each look that makes up the 10 piece collection of structured jackets, tunics, bottoms, and fluid pieces representative of the city’s constant evolution. Also present in Contemplation is the influence of 40’s fashion that evolved from the consequence of War. The structure of women’s clothing was apropos to the workforce and the era they were entering. Brazilian architect Oscar Neimeyer has also been an influential figure in Vega’s studies. Neimeyer is considered to be one of the key individuals in the development of modern architecture and was most famous for his use of abstract forms and curves that characterize most of his works. Production elements to tie the visuals also included a backdrop video produced by video artist Carlos Pedreanez and original music by Elodie Milo.

Lisu Vega is a dreamer. “I’m a glutton when it comes to dreaming big”, says the Miami born artist and designer who after a 23-year departure from her birth city, fell in love with the Miami that now takes center stage in her designs. Picking through what once was since the age of 17, Vega has recycled broken down materials and scraps to create and make anew. Plastics, metals, old clothes, and fabrics, often make their way to Vega’s line. Her goal, the work to be seen, experienced, and contemplated for the true art it is.

Making note that people think she is “different” and does not fit in with mainstream designers and what’s on trend helps her reaffirm that she is on the right path, an illuminated path, that brings her much creative satisfaction with no rules only creative freedom to fuel her work. Using her artistic and graphic design skills, her fabrics are nothing but complex inviting you to look at beauty differently because after all, beauty is everywhere and in everything.
