From the Runway to Reality: Celebrity Hair Color Transformations You Can Actually Try
By Jenna Levine.
Celebrity hair transformations are wonderful inspiration.
But after more than two decades working with color, there is something I always tell my clients:
Bring me the photograph. Just don’t expect me to copy it.
My job as a Master Colorist is not to make you look like the celebrity in the picture. It is to understand why that color works on her and then decide which elements can work beautifully on you.
Skin tone matters.
Your natural base matters.
The condition of your hair matters.
Your lifestyle matters too.
And perhaps most importantly, we have to talk about maintenance before we talk about transformation.
The celebrity hair color trends of 2026 are giving us plenty of inspiration. What I particularly like this year is that many of the strongest looks are not built around extreme highlighting.
We are seeing depth again.
We are seeing shine.
We are seeing warmer blondes, dimensional brunettes and sophisticated reds.
That is good news for women in the real world.
Here are five celebrity transformations I am watching and how I would translate each one for the woman sitting in my chair.
Dakota Johnson: Dirty Blonde With Depth

Dakota Johnson surprised everyone when she moved away from her signature brunette and into a softer dirty blonde.
What interests me about this transformation is what she didn’t do.
She didn’t become an ultra-bright blonde.
Her colorist preserved brunette depth and blended it into creamy blonde tones. The contrast remains soft.
That makes all the difference.
How I Would Adapt It for You
If you are naturally brunette, please don’t assume that becoming blonde means we need to lighten every strand.
Often, I would rather preserve some of your natural depth at the root.
Then we can strategically lighten the mid-lengths, ends and areas around the face.
This creates movement without making the color look striped or overprocessed.
It also gives us a much softer grow-out.
For a woman who has worn dark color for years, I would approach this transformation gradually.
Hair has a history.
If there are years of artificial dark pigment underneath, one appointment may not be the right way to reach the final destination.
Healthy blonde is always more beautiful than rushed blonde.
I recommend this direction for: the brunette who wants to feel lighter and fresher without committing to high-maintenance blonde.
Daisy Edgar-Jones: Auburn Copper That Still Feels Sophisticated

Daisy Edgar-Jones has moved through several beautiful brunette variations. Her recent auburn-copper transformation is especially interesting.
The color sits beautifully between brunette, auburn and copper.
That is exactly why I like it.
It doesn’t feel like a costume.
It feels like warmth has been introduced into the hair rather than placed on top of it.
How I Would Adapt It for You
When a brunette client tells me she wants to try red, I rarely begin by thinking, How red can we make her?
I begin by looking at her skin.
A woman with warmer undertones may look beautiful with golden copper or cinnamon.
For cooler skin, I may bring the formula closer to auburn or a deeper red-brown.
For neutral complexions, we often have more flexibility.
This is also a wonderful option for someone who wants a visible change without becoming dramatically lighter.
Sometimes a beautifully formulated gloss can introduce enough copper or auburn reflection to completely change the way brunette hair catches the light.
I recommend this direction for: the brunette who is bored with brown but isn’t ready to become blonde.
Selena Gomez: When Copper Becomes the Statement

Selena Gomez recently appeared with a much stronger copper-red look.
Whether a celebrity transformation is permanent or created for a role isn’t particularly important to me when I am looking at it as inspiration.
What interests me is the color story.
Selena’s version is a perfect example of the difference between adding warmth and making warmth the focal point.
How I Would Adapt It for You
If you show me a photograph like this, one of my first questions will be:
How much attention do you want your new hair color to attract?
Because this is no longer a subtle adjustment.
For a medium brunette, I might create a sophisticated copper-brown first.
For someone with a lighter natural base, we may be able to show significantly more copper.
And if you need gray coverage, we have another consideration.
I need to formulate for coverage and fashion tone.
Those are not always the same formula.
Red also requires commitment.
Copper and red pigments can lose their vibrancy. That means your home care and gloss appointments matter.
Beautiful red should look intentional.
Not faded.
I recommend this direction for: the woman who has had essentially the same hair for years and is finally ready for people to notice the change.
Kaia Gerber: The Sunlit Brunette

Kaia Gerber’s recent brunette is one of my favorite examples of how subtle color can still have tremendous impact.
Her color was inspired by photographs of her mother, Cindy Crawford, during the 1990s.
But the result feels completely current.
The brunette remains dominant. Fine golden highlights create light through the hair without turning the overall color blonde.
This is what I call letting dimension do the work.
How I Would Adapt It for You
For many of my brunette clients, this is exactly the kind of transformation I would recommend.
You don’t need highlights everywhere.
You need them where the hair naturally needs movement.
I might brighten around the face.
I may add a little more light through the mid-lengths.
Perhaps the ends become slightly warmer.
But I would protect the richness of the brunette.
Then comes one of my favorite tools in color: gloss.
Do not underestimate what beautiful gloss can do.
It can refine tone, restore richness and give brunette hair that reflective finish we associate with expensive-looking color.
I recommend this direction for: the woman who wants people to say, “Your hair looks amazing,” rather than, “You got highlights.”
Gigi Hadid: The Drama of Going Dark

Gigi Hadid created an entirely different conversation when she appeared with a dramatic matte-black bob earlier this year.
Going from blonde to almost black creates immediate impact.
But this is one celebrity look where I would tell most clients:
Let’s talk before we do that.
Very dark color can be gorgeous.
It can create incredible contrast.
It can make eye color stand out.
But black is not forgiving.
How I Would Adapt It for You
You may not actually need black.
A deep espresso brunette can create much of the same drama while looking softer against the complexion.
Sometimes even moving one or two levels darker produces the transformation a client is looking for.
Undertone is crucial here.
If someone has delicate coloring, a very flat black can overwhelm her features.
A dimensional espresso or rich neutral brunette may be much more flattering.
There is another practical issue I always discuss.
Going dark is considerably easier than getting light again.
If I suspect you may want blonde highlights six months later, I need to know that before we formulate your dark color today.
This is where temporary, demi-permanent or gloss-based options may make more sense than immediately committing to permanent black.
I recommend this direction for: the woman who wants drama, contrast and shine but understands that dark color is a commitment.
Three Real Women, Three Different Color Strategies

This is where celebrity photographs become genuinely useful.
Let me show you how differently I might interpret the same trends depending on the woman sitting in front of me.
The Professional Woman Who Wants Polished Hair
You want your hair to look sophisticated every day.
You don’t necessarily want your color to announce itself before you enter the room.
I would look toward Kaia Gerber’s dimensional brunette or a more conservative interpretation of Dakota Johnson’s dirty blonde.
Your color should grow beautifully.
It should flatter your complexion without demanding constant correction.
And it needs shine.
For this woman, I often prefer beautifully placed dimension over a head full of highlights.
The Woman Who Wants Low Maintenance
You love beautiful hair.
You just don’t want to live at the salon.
Then we need to work with your natural base instead of constantly fighting it.
A brunette may need caramel dimension.
A dark blonde may need bronde.
A woman with natural warmth may look beautiful with an auburn gloss.
The key is choosing a color that still looks attractive as it grows.
Low maintenance does not mean boring.
It means strategic.
The Woman Who Needs Gray Coverage but Still Wants Fashionable Color
This is an important category that celebrity hair articles often forget.
Gray coverage does not mean you have to give up dimensional or fashionable color.
But the formulation becomes more sophisticated.
We may need one approach at the root for reliable coverage and another through the lengths to create movement.
You can have cinnamon brunette.
You can have dimensional blonde.
You can have rich auburn.
You can even transition lighter strategically if that makes future gray regrowth softer.
The goal is never to make your hair look like one solid block of color simply because you have gray.
Gray coverage should be part of the color plan.
It should not define the entire look.
What I Want You to Bring to Your Next Color Appointment
Bring inspiration photographs.
I love them.
They show me what your eye is responding to.
But when you show your colorist a celebrity photograph, don’t only say, “I want this.”
Tell us what you love about it.
Is it the warmth?
The brightness around the face?
The contrast?
The depth?
The shine?
Perhaps you don’t actually want Dakota Johnson’s dirty blonde.
Maybe what you love is the softness.
Perhaps you don’t need Selena Gomez’s copper.
Maybe what attracted you was the richness.
Those distinctions help me create something much more personal.
My Most Important Color Rule for 2026

If I had to take one lesson from this year’s celebrity transformations, it would be this:
Healthy-looking hair is the new luxury.
I would rather give you slightly less lightening and beautiful, reflective hair than push your hair beyond what it can safely handle just to reproduce a photograph.
Your color should have dimension.
It should move.
It should reflect light.
And it should still look beautiful several weeks after you leave the salon.
Celebrity hair gives us fantasy.
My job as a colorist is to understand that fantasy and translate it into something you can actually live in.
So bring me Dakota.
Bring me Daisy.
Bring me Selena, Kaia or Gigi.
We can absolutely be inspired by them.
But when you leave my chair, I don’t want you to look like someone else.
I want you to look like the best version of you.

Estamos viendo profundidad nuevamente.
Estamos viendo brillo.
No deslavado.
Tu color debe crecer bien.
Debe favorecer tu complexion sin exigir correcciones constantes.
Y necesita brillo.
Bajo mantenimiento no significa aburrido.
Puedes llevar cinnamon brunette.
Puedes llevar dimensional blonde.
Me encantan.
Tráeme a Daisy.
Tráeme a Selena, Kaia o Gigi.
